A magnetic stirrer is an essential tool in mycology, especially in the making of liquid culture. Its utility is paramount in two main stages:

1. Mycelium Breakdown:
   • Purpose: Just as a mixer grinder pulverizes food, a magnetic stirrer disintegrates mycelium clumps, enabling them to grow independently. This step is particularly crucial post-inoculation, especially when using agar.
   • Benefit: By fragmenting the mycelium into smaller particles, they can grow individually and colonize the substrate more rapidly. This results in a more uniform and swift colonization of the medium. It’s best to use the stirrer at 90% speed during this phase.
2. Aeration During Colonisation:
   • Purpose: Once the desired colonization level is reached, the stirrer’s role transitions from mycelium breakdown to mere agitation of the mixture.
   • Benefit: Gentle and gradual stirring aids in incorporating air, which is essential for mycelium growth and metabolic functions. Proper aeration ensures the mycelium receives the oxygen it necessitates. At this stage, utilize the stirrer at 30-40% speed.

We’ve tested various stirrers for agitating liquid culture and have found Ciblanc to be the superior choice. It agitates the magnet inside a mason jar at high speed without causing the magnet bar to drift to the sides. This ensures the mycelium is broken up optimally, accelerating colonization. This product is outstanding for expanding mycelium cultures.

If you find the bar constantly spinning off, increase the speed incrementally rather than jumping to full speed. Ensure the bar is centered in the jar and the jar is placed in the middle of the machine before starting. The speed requirement might vary based on the volume of the liquid in the jar.
