Radical Mycology by Peter McCoy

This comprehensive 650-page book delves into the fascinating world of mycology, covering topics such as mushroom cultivation, myco-remediation, and more. Known as the ‘Mushroom Bible,’ it is a must-have for both home cultivators and anyone intrigued by the realm of fungi. Considered one of the most accessible texts on the subject, the book provides unique and up-to-date insights into the science and art of mycology.

In 2006, Peter McCoy established Radical Mycology, a grassroots organization dedicated to raising awareness about the diverse ways of working with fungi for personal, societal, and ecological well-being. A decade later, McCoy published Radical Mycology to share the wealth of knowledge and skills accumulated through the organization’s global efforts to advance the science of mycology in practical applications. Challenging prevailing notions about the importance of the Fungal Kingdom, Radical Mycology convincingly explores the multitude of reasons why fungi should be recognized, respected, and embraced for the myriad gifts they offer. As a result, this book stands as one of the most comprehensive resources on mycology, delving into the science of fungi.

Interwoven with insightful essays on the lessons imparted by fungi, Radical Mycology, begins by examining the unique aspects of fungal biology, the crucial ecological roles played by micro and macro fungi, techniques for accurately identifying mushrooms and mycorrhizal fungi, the significance of lichens as indicators of environmental health, and the profound influence fungi have had on the evolution of all life forms and human cultures. Equipped with this foundational knowledge, readers are then guided in their direct interaction with fungi. The book provides in-depth guidance on making potent fungal medicines, cultivating fermenting fungi for food, and low-cost mushroom cultivation using recycled materials while achieving high-quality results akin to laboratory conditions. Going beyond the limitations of other mushroom-focused books, subsequent chapters delve into regenerative natural mushroom farming—a practice heavily influenced by permaculture design principles—along with extensive information on cultivating mycorrhizal fungi and the science of myco-remediation, which involves using fungi to mitigate pollution in our homes and environment. The book concludes with profound insights into the cultural significance of fungi, including a philosophical examination of fungal growth in the design of human societies and a thorough exploration of the history of psychoactive mushrooms.

Throughout this enlightening journey, McCoy shares personal and thought-provoking perspectives based on his 15 years of practical experience and study in the field. By the end, readers are equipped with the knowledge to incorporate mycology into various aspects of their lives, communities, and environments.

Featuring step-by-step protocols suitable for beginners to advanced practitioners, numerous photographs, illustrations, appendices, and profiles of 100 different species, Radical Mycology serves as an invaluable reference for individuals interested in DIY or collaborative homesteading, community organizing, food security, natural medicine, grassroots bioremediation, and the evolution of human-fungal-ecological relationships. Beyond being a mere book about mushrooms, Radical Mycology is a call to form alliances with fungi in endeavours to cultivate a healthier world. With extensive references and illustrations provided by the author, this unprecedented treatise is bound to become a classic for generations to come.
