Millet grain spawn bag for mushroom cultivation Pre sterelized and ready to inoculate with spores or Liquid culture. Enjoy these clean and white french millet also sometimes called bird seed for your mushroom cultivation. All bags come with alcohol swab and digital instructions.
Despite taking great care during processing, it’s possible for some fibers or plastic from the bags to end up on the grains. The grains are also processed alongside other types of grains and may contain pumpkin seeds or other seeds. However, everything is sterilized, so it will not affect your growth.
If you have left the bag for too long, you can rehydrate it with our sterile water syringes, these syringes are also uselful for people inoculating bags with agar wedge and have issues with full colonisation as thry are not adding extra moisture, people who have mistakenly left the bag on heat mat or for people who only have few mls of spore or liquid culture left, they can compensate the rest of liquid using the sterile water.
Please note: Do not purchase this product unless you have a colonized agar plate, spore syringe, or liquid culture. Inoculate upon arrival.
Millet, unlike Rye, is considered the gold standard for growing mushroom mycelium when creating spawn because millets have smaller kernels than rye.
To illustrate the difference in size, consider this example: 0.5 kg of rye contains approximately 200 particles, while the same weight of millet has around 500 particles. The increased number of particles in millet leads to more inoculation points. Inoculation points are the locations where mycelium begins to grow and colonize the substrate.
Density
Density of Hydrated Millet is 0.95 kg/L or 950 kg/m³
1X pre-sterilized Millet Grain Bag
5X pre-sterilized Millet Grain Bag
10X pre-sterilized Millet Grain Bag
For all Variations we have: 500gms, 1KG and 2KG
The 500g variation is supplied as two separate 500g bags (totaling 1kg).
If you are working with our Grain spawn and do not want to use up all the spawn in one go, or inoculated a grain bag with agar, for which you had to cut open the bag but have no way to seal the bag again consider to have our Small Sealing Bag Clips For 2Kg options select the option Medium as they are a bit bigger
Do not risk contamination, that is why we have these clips for you.
We offer High-Quality Disposable Gloves and Masks, essential for maintaining sterile conditions in your mycology projects. We also recommend you buy Biodegradable MEA agar cups for those testing liquid cultures or spore syringes before inoculating their bags. Do you need a sterile workspace? Have a look at our Still Air box (SAB)
Your kits made with Unicorn grow bags, USA
Unicorn is the only bag in the world that has been tested by Eurofins, a third party lab in Europe and passed the stringent EN 1186, and USFDA 1520 for plastic migration into the substrate (Microplastic). Unicorn PP bags was tested at the highest levels of 121 C for 3.5 hours. No PE bags or other manufacturers’ PP bags have achieved this important food safety criteria. So rest assured you are not getting any microplastics from our kits.

Brand: Unicorn (4-T) with injection port for 500 gms and 1kg variations
Brand: Unicorn (10-T) with injection port 2kg variation
For the 2 kg variation, If the advertised plastic bag is not in stock then we upgrade you to a bigger bag with injection port.
We typically do not have 2 kg variations in stock, and it would take at least 3 days to produce them. 1 kg variations, however, are usually available and can ship more quickly. Sometimes when 2 kg variation are not available we may send 2 x 1kg variation bags, they are more expensive but we can send them free of charge, let us know if you do not want us to do that in order notes.
A 2kg grain spawn bag generally takes longer to colonise because of its larger size. If optimum temperatures are not maintained, or if a slower-growing culture is used, colonisation may slow down further, and the bag could even run out of moisture before fully colonising.
For most growers, we recommend starting with 1kg bags, unless you are confident you have a fast-growing culture.
Please also note:
Weight: 2kg bags are heavier, and the bottom grains may get slightly smudged due to compression. This does not affect growth.
Sterilisation: To ensure sterility, 2kg bags are kept longer in the steriliser so that the core reaches 121°C. This process makes the grains a little softer and easier to break apart when needed.
Q. What are White marks on the grains?
A. We use calcium carbonate in the grains, it’s like white powder. Sometimes you will see white marks on the dots in your grains, they are completely harmless and nothing to worry about.
Q. What is the grainy substance at the bottom of my grains?
A. Grainy Substance is Gypsum, It’s a supplement we add to make sure your grains break up easily while providing calcium and sulphites. They do sometimes deposit at the bottom and are completely harmless.
Q. Why do I see condensation?
A. Condensation happens due to temperature difference between the bag and the outside, When you receive the bag and they have condensation, mix your bag thoroughly and the moisture will be reabsorbed by the grains, if you still think the grains are moist, please leave it for 1-2 days before inoculation or reduce the culture injected in the bag.
–Â Take the bags out of their packaging as soon as possible, and keep them at room temperature away from direct cold/heat sources. The bags need to breathe and should not be kept in places where there is no free airflow. Keeping the bag in a closed environment will result in anaerobic contaminants thriving and making the bag moldy.
–Â We recommend that the bags are used as soon as possible to minimize the chances of contamination.
–Â Work in front of a flow hood or a still air box using a completely sterile workspace.
–Â Sanitize the injection port, flame the needle until red, let it cool, and then inject the bag with 10ml Liquid culture for 1kg/2kg and 5ml for 500gms grains or a completely sterile spore syringe.
–Â Once inoculated, move the bag around without shaking. This helps the liquid to move around the bag and not settle at the bottom.
–Â Incubate at 22-24 degrees Celsius in a dark spot and keep all the grain bags at a distance from each other to avoid excess heat, which leads to contamination.
–Â Agitate when 30-50% colonized with clean hands, and do not touch the air filter or make the air filter wet.
If the injection site begins to show contamination, that means either your Liquid culture or Spore syringe had contamination in it.
Additional tips-
–Â Recommended for inoculating with Liquid culture, in contrast to a spore syringe, which may be full of bacterial contamination (Spore syringes are best when purified with Agar plates first; please adhere to this).
–Â Use the inoculated grains/fully colonized grains within 14 days to avoid loss of vigor and dieback.-Â Always keep the Grains somewhere dry, not humid. If the air filter gets wet, the contaminants can start growing on it.
